For every client you serve, every conversation you have and each recommendation you make, you’re helping someone prepare for life’s unexpected moments. Your work is more than simply offering coverage, you’re providing confidence, financial protection and the freedom to choose insurance that fits each client’s unique needs.
What We Accomplished in 2016
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Central United Life Insurance Co. v. Burwell decision. At the time of the July 2016 decision, ManhattanLife operated under Central United Life. The pivotal ruling reaffirmed the importance of preserving access to fixed indemnity insurance as a supplemental coverage option alongside major medical insurance.
As the healthcare landscape underwent substantial change, the decision helped ensure consumers could continue to choose coverage designed to provide financial support during hospitalization and other unexpected health events.
Why It Still Matters
While the ruling helped preserve consumer choice, its true impact has been realized through producers like you who have continued to educate clients and connect them with coverage that matches their financial priorities.
Recent data tells us even more. Industry estimates suggest that since the decision, approximately 15 to 20 million Hospital Indemnity policies have been purchased nationwide, underscoring the enduring demand for the financial protection these plans provide and the unwavering efforts of producers.1

The Difference You Make Today
Over the past decade, healthcare has continued to evolve, yet many Americans still face significant out-of-pocket costs when they’re hospitalized. Hospital Indemnity insurance plays an important role by providing fixed cash benefits that can help consumers manage the financial challenges that often accompany a hospital stay.
Every day, you help clients take preemptive action to mitigate such challenges. In doing this, you play a key role in their preparation for whatever comes next, providing something that goes beyond a policy.
For your clients, you continually:
- Help encourage financial confidence
- Provide reassurance through customized protection
- Promote greater peace of mind about the future
The numbers highlight your success as well. Since the decision, we estimate $1.8 to $3.6 billion in agent compensation has been earned by insurance producers like you. This exemplifies the ongoing need for fixed indemnity plans.

But freedom of choice remains a critical aspect in upholding consumers’ right to choose a meaningful carrier. And it wouldn’t mean nearly as much without dedicated producers who bring those choices to life. This is a responsibility we don’t take lightly and it’s one we’re proud to share with you.
Our Valuable Partnership
At ManhattanLife, we’re honored to partner with producers who believe that meaningful protection begins with meaningful conversations. Part of our company’s purpose is to help preserve consumer choice. For the past decade, we’ve continued to do that and more.
